IJMSC HISTORY

Our history is closely related to the development of communication and media studies in Poland.

Over the last twenty-five years, the Institute grew and evolved under management of its Directors.

It was established on the initiative of Professor Teresa Sasińska-Klas who reorganized the International School of Journalism into the Institute of Journalism and Social Communication that from 1 October 1998 began to educate journalists and media students at the Faculty of Management and Social Communication, Jagiellonian University,  then located at the Main Square. The Institute was relocated to the Campus of the 600th Anniversary of the Jagiellonian University Revival during the term of office of Professor Maria Magoska. Professor Ewa Nowińska, acting as its director, obtained the first EU grant at the Faculty of Management and Social Communication, used to finance research e.g. into promotion of entrepreneurship in the small and medium-sized enterprise sector. During the term of office of Professor Małgorzata Lisowska-Magdziarz, our organization was renamed the Institute of Journalism, Media and Social Communication. In that time, we also obtained authorization to run post-graduate courses and award the degree of doctor in media studies. Further authorization to award the degree of doctor habilitatus in media and communication studies was obtained by the Institute during the first term of office of its current director, JU professor, Dr. habil. Agnieszka Hess. The IJMSC also successfully conducted its publishing activity in that period. The book series published by our Institute enjoy recognition and a well-earned reputation in the academic and practitioner community in Poland and abroad. The KNOWLEDGE – COMMUNICATION – ACTION conference organized by us since 2015 is firmly established in the category of prestigious scientific events dedicated to media-studies.
