DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA

The Department of Political Communication and Media focuses on research into selected aspects of political communication, media policy and media regulation, and journalism on a national, European and international scale.

Work done by its team covers in particular studies into the European public sphere, interrelations between the media and politics, especially the role of media in a democratic system, journalist practices, media structures, legal and extra-legal regulation and self-regulation of the media. New research areas have to be defined in view of emerging challenges, such as structural and ownership changes in the media (especially the growing role of digital platforms), a breakdown of trust in media messages, a shift in the boundaries of institutional journalism. Research and educational projects implemented in the Department of Political Communication and Media respond to this need.

The Department was awarded in 2019 a Jean Monnet Chair 2019-2022, a 3-year research and teaching project in MEDIA FREEDOM, TRUST AND TRANSPARENCY IN THE EUROPEAN UNION. The project includes such research tasks as an analysis of transparency and trust in the media, opinion polling and surveys on attitudes of journalists and politicians towards transparency, trust, and their interrelations.

Since 2014, researchers from our Department have participated in the Media Pluralism Monitor, a project implemented by the Centre for Media Pluralism and Media Freedom at the European University Institute in Florence.

An important area of activity conducted in the Department is the provision of expert analyses, including research projects supporting various measures implemented in media policy and media regulation. Researchers from our Department cooperate with such institutions as the National Broadcasting Council, European Audiovisual Observatory, European Parliament, UNESCO and others.
